His strongest neighborhoods in New York were Greenpoint in northern Brooklyn and Astoria in neighboring Queens, which had the perfect demographic mix of working-class "ethnic whites" (to use an out of date term) and white hipsters.īasically, I see the predictions expressed anticipating the New York Primary and the subsequent reactions to his loss in my wider social circle as an analogue for why Bernie lost the primary. In that aspect, Bernie's unvarnished FDR worship is revealing of his personal philosophy as well. In many Jewish-American families (including my own), he was treated as god (and often still is!) But many embrace of FDR also has to reckon with the ugly parts of his legacy, almost all of which concern minorities: his inaction on African-American civil rights, the Japanese internment camps, and his unwilligness to push opening the US to Jewish refugees prior to WWII. I do think Bernie is sincere in his worship of FDR. ![]() ![]() ![]() As such, albeit more subtly, Sanderism, like Trumpism, relies on nostalgia for a fictional ideal past, to which Sanders promises a return. It's the delusions that he promotes.īernie's whole vision (as well as its rationalizations by prominent apologists like Thomas Frank) is based on an idealized notion of the New Deal and the pre-1968 Democratic Party, one that leaves out the fact that the party was always riven between conservative and progressive factions and that FDR was able to enact New Deal policy in exchange for ignoring civil rights. Like Barney Frank, my issue with Sanders isn't where he fits on the left-right ideological spectrum. The tragedy is that he initiated millions of people into that same worldview. That's Bernie in a nutshell, and still very true today. Bernie's view of the world is that the great majority of people agree with him on all the issues and the only reason he does not win is that the Congress is crooked. To him, anybody who disagrees with him is a crook there are no honest disagreements with people. His holier-than-thou attitude - saying in a very loud voice he is smarter than everyone else and purer than everyone else - really undercuts his effectiveness. He is completely ineffective as a lobbyist because he offends just about everyone. These lines are pulled from an article in the Jissue of the obscure Bangor Daily News, which might be why they haven't become more frequently cited:īernie alienates his natural allies. This is Barney Frank's fullest indictment of Bernie Sanders from the flurry of 1991 news coverage of Sanders' arrival in the House, and it encapsulates the case against Sanders more succinctly and accurately than anything else I've read.
